November 20th to 26th is Canada’s Education Savings Week

Canada Education Savings week coincides with United Nation’s Children’s Day on November 20th.  Article 28 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states that “every child has a right to education”, and Michelle Knoll, Executive Director of the Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre and Co-Chair of Smart Start Halton, is doing everything she can to make sure every child in Halton gets their Canada Learning Bond.

“It’s profound to see the shift that happens with families once they see their children’s post-secondary education savings grow”, says Knoll.  “The conversation moves from ‘Will my child go to school’ to ‘What program will my child be taking once they go to college or university?’”  Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre  is gearing up for a November 23rd Canada Learning Bond sign up event – happening from 12pm to 4pm encouraging eligible families to register their child for the Canada Learning Bond – up to $2,000 in free money for post-secondary education/training.

Over the last three years, Smart Start Halton has proven through their results that collective impact works.  Smart Start Halton is a community collaborative which came together with the intention to increase the dismal take-up rates for the Canada Learning Bond in Halton. To date, over 4,000 children have signed up for the Canada Learning Bond as a result of these collective efforts, representing over $8 million dollars in new funds for post-secondary educations savings in Halton.  The Halton Poverty Roundtable has served as the backbone support organization for this initiative.

June Cockwell, Co-Chair of Smart Start Halton, applauds the efforts of the community partners in Halton who have who stepped up to the challenge. “Rallying partners around this initiative was extremely easy once stakeholders understood the very real opportunity to shift the trajectory of the almost16,000 children who are eligible today, in Halton, and not registered for the Canada Learning Bond.”

Smart Start Halton is a part of a national effort to educate Canadians about education savings and opportunities. For more information visit: http://www.educationsavingsweek.org/
